No Fewer Than Six Lose Their Lives in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Event

No fewer than six people have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in the West African nation.

The Wednesday's "tragic" event seems to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of candidates who overcame security measures and stormed the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

22 others were injured, among them 5 who are in serious state.

A large crowd had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the military.

Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest official data indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and often result in disorderly situations.

The closing date to submit applications for this recruitment was extended by a week to accommodate more applicants, as a number had experienced challenges in the application procedure.

Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede took place ahead of the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President President John Mahama has gone to see the wounded in medical care.
