Dedicated fans of the series finally got a much-anticipated backstory in season 2's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This episode is likely to prompt a lot of discussion and pose numerous inquiries about the nature of a certain demonic Overlord who appears far more powerful than any character before understood. The new revelations feature a look into the human life of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and sentence to the underworld.
The show's creator disclosed a secret about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a major tease for the third season. She also offered further details into the process of creating the human versions of her infernal cartoon figures.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback discloses that fan-favorite personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the realm beyond in advance to obtain a strong position in Hell. Rosie, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises the question: How is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, moving into the third season,” the creator states. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer could be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I'm very excited for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she says holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
The showrunner promises that the upcoming season will address the queries followers have been asking, such as why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these individuals are making, and everything — it contributes to a larger story,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides a further look into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as humans, following after seeing another character's historical mortal appearance in episode 2. The creator says that a lot of thought went into these character designs.
“The human versions of the characters carry great significance,” she notes. “They range from appearing really different from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between choosing something that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to going with something that's historically correct. We opted for creating something that just felt like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one really had extended hair like that in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we think the outline is so important, and we also just felt he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to explore and determine. I am looking forward for fans to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on midweek on Prime Video.
