Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and enthusiasts have discovered a variety of interesting creations from small studios. But, one is particularly notable for its unconventional concept. Named Unko Technica, this retro-inspired side-scrolling game includes a protagonist that is actually a dung trying to navigate to a restroom. In case you're wondering, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
How you interact is straightforward: press a single jump button. Across 150 levels, you'll face tough enemies and visit a market to buy skins for your poop character.
Plan your movements carefully, as a wrong move forces starting over. Leap using bubbles to launch yourself to new heights, cross crumbling ledges, and activate triggers to unlock new areas. Earn UN-KOINS to purchase tougher levels in which the action ramps up.
Visually, the experience features neon level designs and an amazing music score. Its minimalist graphics with morphing geometric shapes could recall players of beloved games like Earthbound.
While it's hard to recall other games where you are a dung character, interactive entertainment often featured fecal matter. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, players craft explosives from character droppings. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ feces as plant food. Unsurprisingly, fecal references is present extensively in the adventure The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its humorous idea, Unko Technica has already garnered significant recognition, like winning at Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio in 2023. This trial version is ready currently on Steam, with the final release planned to launch on PC this November.
