Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's legal representative entered the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the case dismissed for several causes including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was charged shortly after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to take action against him.
In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they planned to present multiple legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a court case, stating the government's case was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to take over the proceedings.
The former director's legal matter was originally managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
Mr Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the judge recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.
"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he told the court.
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just shortly prior to the national vote that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.
Government attorneys claim the former director lied to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, block and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.
Through a recording the former director shared to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".
"We have understood for considerable time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a court case."
The charges against James Comey emerged after Trump published on social media demanding his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute James Comey and others.
