Donald Trump has yet again announced he would urge FIFA to remove upcoming World Cup games from a host city based on that city's political climate, with the Boston region emerging as the most recent targeted location to encounter such threats from the American leader. Moreover, Trump indicated he would evaluate similar action against Los Angeles for the upcoming Olympic Games due to possible public safety risks.
While Trump holds no formal power to personally cancel either competition, he may exert influence the respective governing bodies overseeing each competition to move locations.
His remarks were made during a press event with Argentinian president Milei, who was present in the executive mansion following the disclosure of a $20 billion bailout for the Argentine economy. At the conclusion of the meeting, a reporter inquired Trump about a latest “street takeover” in the city where authorities were targeted and a patrol car was set on fire. The reporter also questioned if the situation could result in the removal of hosting duties for the 48-team soccer tournament.
“I would take them away,” Trump remarked concerning the soccer matches, scheduled to be hosted at Gillette Stadium. “Their mayor is poor … she’s radical left, and activists are dominating sections of Boston. That’s a significant statement, isn't it?”
Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized occurrence where large crowds congregate on city streets after dark to engage in dangerous driving, have been a frequent problem in American cities since the lockdown restrictions. Current incidents have escalated into violence in the region, specifically in Boston. Nevertheless, these gatherings are typically not seen as linked to any specific political ideology.
“When a mayor is performing poorly, and I feel there’s security risks, I'd call the organization's president, who is excellent, and suggest let’s move it to another location,” Trump commented during the event. “He'd do that. He might not prefer doing it, but he'd agree. Without hesitation, he would.”
Gianni Infantino has been open his efforts to be closely connected with Trump prior to the upcoming World Cup, planned to be organized in multiple US locations across the America along with a couple in the northern neighbor and multiple in the southern neighbor. The organization's leader has been present at various Oval Office events, arranged for Trump deliver the club tournament trophy after the concluding game, and has even rescheduled his the group's assembly to travel with Trump on a journey to the Gulf states earlier in 2025.
Nevertheless, Trump from threatening the cancellation of FIFA World Cup matches from additional American venues. Recently, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis faced similar criticism, with Trump stating both cities were “run by radical left lunatics who lack understanding what they’re doing,” while challenging the safety level of both locales and suggesting that matches could be shifted.
FIFA vice-president Montagliani dismissed Trump’s claims when he responded days later at a gathering in the UK capital.
“It is our competition, under our authority, the organization determines these matters,” Montagliani declared. “Respectfully to current world leaders, soccer is more important than political figures and football will survive their administration and their leadership. It's the essence of this sport, that it is transcends one leader and beyond any country.”
During the event, Trump’s answer to a question about the Massachusetts city extended to a parallel statement regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“When I perceived LA was not going to be sufficiently organized, I will move it to a different city as needed,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to obtain a different kind of permission, but we would proceed.”
Official consent Trump mentioned would must come through the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their leader, she, was selected to her post in this year and has not yet appear together with Trump, though she said that she desires a sit-down with the US figure at some point.
The former president also questioned the state's leader Newsom’s management of the LA wildfires, saying that a parallel incident could lead to the relocation of the Games.
“When the governor is uncooperative, we’re gonna have to be firm,” Trump stated.
His statement was equally clear for Boston.
“The city must improve their situation,” he said. “It's my message.”
